What was interesting about this walk was that we were on an
island within an island – Sauvie Island is the largest
island in Oregon and sits just east of Portland on the Columbia
River. There is another island on Sauvie that has been annexed
and made into a wilderness area – it attracts mostly
birders and people out for a short walk – it sits in
the middle of Sturgeon Lake.
On the south side of the island
you see the hills of Forest Park and to the north you can see
Mt. Adams and St. Helens.
The is a great deal of flora and
fauna along the way. It is remarkable that the island is covered
in old oak trees – some of them are very large and appear
to be several hundred years in age – very old for an
oak. If you have allergies I recommend going in early April
or in late June – in between then you will be bombarded
with grass pollen.
