Where to hike in Oregon...

I'm going to be in the Oregon area for a couple of weeks in the spring. Can anyone suggest any good loop hikes 8-15 miles close to the Portland area?

Re: Where to hike in Oregon...
Fly Hiker, Yep - there are tons of loop trails to choose from and it depends on what you want to tackle.  When I first moved to Oregon in 1990, the biggest challenge for me was getting use to the relief as compared to the east coast.  It is much more rugged and a 9 mile loop here may not be the same from where you are hailing.  Be that as it may, what you should do is pick up a book on hiking in Oregon and focus on three areas - Mount Hood area; Jefferson national forest (Mt. Jefferson, Three Fingered Jack); and try some hiking in the Columbia Gorge.  See the Dog Mountain loop (featured on this site) and Forest Park Trail (also on this site).   Check out Frog Camp in the Cascades - there are seveal loops that spring from that area and you can not get better natural beauty and views of multiple peaks than that area.   Also look into going to Green lake if you are going to be in the Bend area - it has seasonal heavy use but the destination on a glacier lake is worth the trip.

Re: Where to hike in Oregon...
Good evening, flyhiker. I saw your post above, and wondered if you ever made it to Oregon and if you found any good hiking places? I live in Oregon, and grew up in the NW. There are several places that I could suggest if you ever make it back. I hope you enjoyed your stay here. Take care

Re: Where to hike in Oregon...

Thanks for the reply. I made it out last year visiting some friends outside of Portland and got a chance to hike Dog Mountain and Hunchback Mountain at Zig Zag. I'm going to try and make it back in June of this year...any day loop hikes between 8-20 miles that you could recommend would be great. East cost hiking is nice but I was spoiled hiking in the Northwest.

Thanks.

Re: Where to hike in Oregon...
Eagle Creek Trail in the Gorge is a popular trail. You can hike 6 miles to Tunnel Fall and then turn back or you can hike all the way 14 miles to Whatum Lake. Simon

Re: Where to hike in Oregon...

Thanks Simon I'll check it out, we want to do at least one 10+ mile day hike in the Columbia gorge area this year. We're going back to hike from Jun 11-17 and were also thinking about doing some hiking near Mt. Hood maybe the Hood side of ZigZag since we did Huntchback mountain last year. Any thought/comments or recommendations about the area?

Thanks again!

Re: Where to hike in Oregon...
You can hike from ZigZag to Paradise Park. It is really pretty with Mt. Hood in the front and the meadows full of wildflowers. I found this website with some directions. http://www.evergreenhiker.net/hoodfcss.htm This site has some nice pics of paradise park. http://www.nwhiker.com/PhotoAlbum20.html Have fun! Simon
