Best trail around Blacksburg
, I went to school at Va Tech and have some really nice memories of walking around and exploring caves back in the 60's. It's been a really long time and I can't remember where they were now. Anyway...

What is anyone's opinion of the best trail around the Blacksburg area? It'd be nice to get back to the campus and do a hike while I'm in the area. Don't know when I could go, so trail conditions for different times would be nice to know about also.

Thanks.

Re: Best trail around Blacksburg

Is that where I-64 leaves I-81 to go west? If so go west on I-64 and checkout the trails in and around Douthat (spl?) state park. I've not visited there yet but been told the trail network is pretty extensive with some good ridge walks and a possible waterfall.

Re: Best trail around Blacksburg

Class of '03 here.  I took my car up to Brush Mountain and spent the night there once.  Great views at night and in the morning of campus.  If you take 460 West, past the Prices Fork, and just past the last right turn into Blacksburg (I think there is a stop light there) there should be a left turn onto a dirt trail that takes you up to a parking area.  You can park there or take the trail further up (less that half a mile) to a very primitive campsite.  No water and not even a fire ring, but great for an overnight camp-out-of-your-4x4 sort of place!

The AT isn't too far from the Burg as well.  Mount McKinney is a classic hike we used to to alot.  Good place to meet some Thru-hikers.

Cascades is another place... great for taking a icey summer dip!

GO HOKIES!!!

Re: Best trail around Blacksburg

Douthat has some great trails. One I remember pretty clearly passes through a stand of old woody rhodedendron. It is a beautiful place to camp with kids. But it is a bit North of Blacksburg.

Mount Rogers might be a good trip for you

Re: Best trail around Blacksburg
, I have always enjoyed the trails around and above Mountain Lake.  Wind Rock (which the AT crosses) is a nice overlook, not too far off the access road.  Another nice hike is War Spur, although i have not been there since the Woody Adelgid has wreaked havoc.  There is a virgin timberstand on the War Spur trail which is comprised primarily of hemlocks - they are massive - i hope they have not been decimated.  A nice view can be had from War Spur overlook.  Lastly, there is a trail up behind the Mountain Lake hotel which climbs up to over 5k' feet elevation.  While the view is somewhat limited, you really get up there.
