Ridge trails in West Virginia
A buddy and I are going to be doing a 4-5 day backpack in West Virginia in about 5 days. I was looking at Dolly Sods, but am not sure if this is what I want. I was hoping for a circuit hike, mostly along ridgelines with outstanding views along the way. We were hoping to be in rugged territory, but stay mostly on top. Dolly Sods seems to be on a gentle plateau, and with few opportunities in the year to pack, I want to make this one a memorable one. Thanks for any advice.

I really don't think the Sods will dissapoint you. However, I don't think there is enogh there for more than a 3 day trip. I'd recommend doing this one:

Then driving in your for 20 minutes and doing this one or a shorter variation I can show you:

Re: Ridge trails in West Virginia
Thanks very much for the reply. The first link looks good, the 2nd with the bushwhack may be beyond what we want to attempt. But the photos on that look very tempting to try it as well. I was also looking at the North Fork Mountain trail( probably just up and back overnighter for that one). Is it possible to do anything in the Roaring fork area without the difficulty of finding  some of the trails? Those views look awesome.

Re: Ridge trails in West Virginia
If you want to do an overnighter on the Plains the one on my site can be modified. It doesn't go out to the canyon rim but I can show you some out and backs to nice vistas along the route. It would still include the "Hidden Passage" but that is becoming a regular footpath these days.

Re: Ridge trails in West Virginia
PS: THe North Fork Mountain is a great hike but be prepared to carry whatever water you need for the trip with you. There are no water sources along the entire trail or its connectors.

Re: Ridge trails in West Virginia

I would also agree with mrhyker.  North Mountain trail is a great ridge line trail with a lot of good views.  But you will definatly need to carry all water.
