Mount Rogers Backpacking Trip

Hey everyone, im in the process of planning a Mount Rogers backpacking trip and having never backpacked near that area, I was wondering if someone could help me out and let me know what a good route would be and some campsites to stay at.

Some info:

The trip will be 2 nights and 2 days - Arrive on Friday evening, hike for a short bit and then set up camp. Start mid-morning Saturday and reach Mount Rogers summit, set up camp and then head back to the car on Sunday.

I have a map of the Mount Rogers Rec Area.

Thanks!

Re: Mount Rogers Backpacking Trip

I have camped in that area several times and this is how I would do it the first time: I would park in the overnight lot at Grayson Highlands State Park and start the hike at Massie Gap. The Appalachian Trail can be reached after about 1/4 mile up a steep hill. Follow the AT towards Rhododendron Gap, you will reach this place after a total hike from Massie Gap of about 2 miles. You will know when you get there since there is a huge "intersection" of trails, one of them equestrian, and it's a pretty torn up mess of dirt and rocks. There are signs in the area, one of them says "Lewis Fork Wilderness".  Keep following the AT from this place and you will enter a rhododendron tunnel about 100 yds or so long. Once out of that there will be campsites starting on the left of the trail, grassy areas with fire rings. There are many spruce trees around these camping areas that can help screen out heavy wind and the ever-changing weather of the area. Water can be found near these camps if you walk out of the campsite on the side opposite the AT through some trees into a clearing with a great view into NC. You must keep walking just a little down the hill and there is an area with a spring. Hard to tell you the location without knowing which camp you may choose but it is there and I don't think marked on the AT trail maps. The sure fire easy water to find is behind the Thomas Knob Shelter following the blue-blazed trail but that is another 1 mile from the camping area I described. The shelter always attracts a large crowd and will most likely be taken on a weekend anyway so never count on occupying it. Hope this helps.

Re: Mount Rogers Backpacking Trip
I can second accipter's recommendation - beautiful hike, nice route to Mt. Roger's. Only issue is that one you camp the first night, you don't have much of a hike left on the second day unless you plan to hike around Mt. Roger's once you set up camp. As I recall, it is only about 1/2 hour hike from Rhododendron Gap to the Summit of Mt. Rogers. If you are really into hiking, this may not be enough.

Re: Mount Rogers Backpacking Trip
Thanks guys for your help.  Im going to check out the map I have of that area and plot that route and see how it is and if its too short, ill just tie in some other trail(s) to do.  Are there any cliffs near by?

Re: Mount Rogers Backpacking Trip
One of the great reasons to camp at the spot I described is the close proximity to a wonderful rock outcropping. If you grab the 1st camping spot after the rhododendron tunnel then you are about 300yds from a some rocks with a 75 ft drop on one side. I wouldn't call any of the formations up there cliffs but there are rocky places with big drops all around. The view is really nice from the place I described, it's a great place to sit day or night, if the wind gets bad there are rocks you can get behind and be shielded. If you do want to do longer hikes there are numerous trails radiating out on all directions from this spot and you can set up camp and head out.

there is a 13.3 mile loop described in the book hiking Virginia.  this looks more like a slow day 1 hike and a quick day 2 hike (day 1 is mainly ascent).  u start at grindstone campground and ascend 2000 feet.  there is a camping area around thomas knob halfway or so through the hike.  continue east where u pick up cliffside trail and then lewis fork trail and eventually end back up at grindstone.  i am going to give it a shot next weekend.  will let u know how it was.
